Another Conversation Between Deranged Writers I: Of Bullies & Favorite Songs

I

On April 10, 2012, after gulping a can of his favorite Coca-Cola (fresh from the cool refrigerator) at home, The Deranged Writer, in his pambahay outfit, heard a familiar song: Tootsie Gueverra’s “Kaba.” When he heard the OPM hit, it reminded Dewey not of love, but of a hurtful period: third grade. That was the year he was still the butt of the bullies’ jokes, and he was incredibly annoyed by that one classmate who kept singing “Kaba” every morning.

Song of the Moment XCIV: The Cranberries’ “Zombie”

I felt a bit anxious today, a Sunday, so I attended Mass on my own and I went to my favorite cafe to relax. I ordered the usual (and comforting) affogato and continued reading The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music, a book by my hero Dave Grohl. (Yes, I did say “my hero”, a reference to the Foo Fighters classic! Also, this is my second time reading the book, and I’m about to finish it by tomorrow.)

And for once, while I was reading, I didn’t listen to music through my phone. Tonight, I relied on the cafe’s vinyl player, and it played many songs from The Cranberries. The song that stood out for me is the iconic “Zombie”. It has been a long time since I heard “Zombie”, and hearing it brought me back to the time when cassette tapes were the norm and when the only source of stress for me was homework. Memories. And that’s why it’s my Song of the Moment.

The music video of The Cranberries’ “Zombie”.

Anyway, tomorrow is September 1. That means it’s the start of Christmas season in the Philippines. Exciting times!

See you in the next post!

10-Minute Warning CLXXII

Hello, Diary. I’m back after a pretty wonderful weekend, which is why I have not blogged the past few days.

What happened? Well, I don’t want to spill the details because I’m tired, but here’s what I can vaguely tell for now:

  • Last Friday, I had a pleasant stroll and a tasty burrito despite the drizzle.
  • Last Saturday, I met and had a photo taken with my childhood crush.
  • I had a solemn Mass and a lovely Sunday dinner with my family.

That’s pretty much it. And I’m aware that I still have not reached my monthly blog count, but I don’t care because, like I said, I had a pretty wonderful weekend.

See you tomorrow!
