Hello, ladies and gentlemen! I’m The Deranged Writer, and welcome to the second edition of Notes to Self, where I keep in my mind and heart a relevant quote from any form of media, someone I know in real life, or a personal hero.
Speaking of personal heroes, I would like to quote my childhood hero and my favorite professional wrestler of all time, The Undertaker.
On an episode of WWE Raw before the InVasion pay-per-view event, company owner Vince McMahon, the APA (Farooq and Bradshaw), and even the venerable “Classy” Freddie Blassie (who stood out of his wheelchair) had a few words with the entire WWE roster, main eventers, midcarders, and even referees alike. But the few words that really stood out for me came from bandana-wearing American Badass himself:
“There’s no shame in going out fighting and getting your ass kicked, but there’s no honor in not fighting at all.”
The Undertaker, WWE Raw (2001)
The Deadman is right. “There is no honor in not fighting at all.” And fighting doesn’t only mean defending myself from drunkards, pickpockets, and even killers. Fighting means getting out of bed even if I’m not motivated at all. Fighting means working hard and smart to achieve a comfortable life. Fighting means moving forward even if the demons in my head tell me not to. Fighting doesn’t always lead to victory, but we keep fighting no matter what.
Years after The Deadman said those encouraging words on live television, I still keep them in my mind. Thank you, Undertaker.
