XXXIV: The Hulk Hogan Question My Grandfather Frequently Asked

Usually, I would watch WWE alone, and I’m cool with it. Yes, I eventually found a few friends who watch WWE or pro wrestling in general (casual or a die-hard fan like me), but I also accepted a long time ago that pro wrestling is not everyone’s cup of tea.

Whenever I do watch pro wrestling with other people, it’s even better. One of my bonding moments with my Father would be watching clips of WWE (old or new) on YouTube. Sometimes, my Younger Brother (the Kane to my Undertaker) would watch with me, too. Recently, when I was watching the recent edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event, my Younger Brother was surprised to see Goldberg in action. (I told him it was his retirement match, and he was battling Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship.)

But whenever I watch WWE with my lolo (Tagalog for “grandfather”), Lolo Ice, it’s a different situation—primarily because he doesn’t know it’s scripted, predetermined. If I did bring up the scripted fact to him, he would forget it, and he would still cheer for the faces (heroes) and jeer for the heels (villains)… and I love him for that. I can just enjoy watching the matches and moments with my lolo without analyzing them. This is why I called him my wrestling buddy.

And of all the times Lolo Ice and I watched any wrestling match or moment, he would always bring up one question about an important figure in pro wrestling, and I would always answer the same way.

Song of the Moment XCI: New Radicals’ “Someday We’ll Know” (Again)

Many things happened yesterday. I took the train to Makati and met my parents there. We did an ocular in the south. We tried an interesting Filipino restaurant near the ocular site. We had a nice afternoon coffee at the nearest mall. I watched Superman for the second time (alone, this time), and that made me appreciate DC Studios’ first movie even more. And then I dueled with my cousins on a game of Uno. (Just one round.)

What are the things that tied it all together? I was with my loved ones, and it was raining all day long. Also, I had to power through all the events even if I only had 5 hours of sleep.

Now, the continuous rain, the lack of sleep, and yesterday’s events led me to have a mellow mind and heart tonight, with a celebratory Devil’s Cup on hand. It has been a month and a few days since I felt this way, and tonight, I’m fine with it.

And remember when I said that my Spotify has been playing the right soundtrack at the right time recently? The universe and the app did it again tonight, and this time, it played something that reminds me of an old friend and a bittersweet moment. It’s “Someday We’ll Know” by New Radicals, a previous Song of the Moment.

What a perfect mellow song for tonight.

Happy weekend, everyone.

XXXII: The Deranged Writer’s Struggle with Steinermania I

“Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner. He looked nuts. Image credit: WWE.

Scott Steiner is one of my favorite professional wrestlers of all time. As one-half of the Steiner Brothers alongside Rick Steiner, he is a gifted heavyweight athlete who unbelievably moves with the agility of a cruiserweight. And when he became the madman that is “Big Poppa Pump”, he delivered some of the craziest diatribes in pro wrestling history (whether he’s wearing a chainmail headgear or not)… and I laugh at them. The man has no chill.

But lately, I think I have been watching too many Scott Steiner videos too many times, and almost everything reminds me of him. In short, I got Steinermania.
