The Recently III

As much as I like beefing up The Diary with poems, sometimes I forget that this is, first and foremost, a personal blog, not just a literary one. Take it easy, Dewey.

With that, I’m going to share slices of my life in the third edition of The Recently.

Recently, I listened to…

My favorite songs from Motörhead, the legendary heavy metal/rock n’ roll band from England, and one of my top five favorite bands.

Recently, I made a playlist of my favorite songs per band, and the speed metal pioneers (led by the late, great Lemmy Kilmister) are on my current musical rotation. One reason for that is whenever I feel butterflies in my stomach, I do my best to drown the giddiness with loud music. As much as I love the feeling of kilig, sometimes staying that way can distract me from reaching my goals, and listening to loud bands (like the 140 decibel-reaching metal music of Motörhead) helps me regain focus.

You might ask, “Dewey, what’s the one song from Motörhead you would recommend to anyone?” Well, I’m glad you asked. Let me write a surprise Song of the Moment.

Song of the Moment CX: Motörhead’s “Ace of Spades”

If I were to recommend one Motörhead song to anyone, I would easily answer “Ace of Spades”, the only single from the band’s fourth studio album of the same name, and the band’s trademark song filled with fast, fearless energy.

Even if I will never see Lemmy perform live, my heart will always cherish the fact that my top favorite band, Foo Fighters, delivered a snippet of the iconic metal song during “No Son of Mine” at the Singapore Grand Prix in 2025. Unforgettable. With that amazing tribute, I’m pretty sure Lemmy is smiling from above while having his favorite Jack and Cokes.

Motörhead’s trademark song, “Ace of Spades”.

Recently, I read…

Pachinko, a historical fiction novel written by Min Jin Lee.

My taste for books usually revolves around worlds of superheroes, spies, and dystopias. So, when a friend mentioned Pachinko to me, I got curious, and then I thought reading a book out of my orbit would expand my mind and be a breath of fresh air. After visiting three bookstores (three!) around the metro, I finally found a copy (the last one from the store!). After reading a few chapters, I was already moved by the evocative storytelling about the struggles of many generations of Koreans. I’m glad I bought the book, and I look forward to reading the rest of the story.

I’m glad I bought a copy of Pachinko!

Also, while I was reading slowly (because I’m wired like that), I also dug up the Korean words online since I’m also trying to learn the language (slowly, of course).

I hope this is the first of many uncharted waters to explore in 2026.

Recently, I bought…

A Marvel Deadpool & Wolverine Champion Class 04 – Deadpool figure from Blokees, a snap-fit model.

I admit that the Deadpool figure is one of the few things I bought recently, but I want to give the figure the spotlight because:

  1. I bought it before going to my birthday dinner (December 5), but…
  2. I only found time to assemble the figure last Friday, January 30.

Oh, it has been a thrill building the figure based on The Regenerating Degenerate, my favorite Marvel Comics character. This is technically my first Deadpool action figure (my sole Funko Pop doesn’t count), and I haven’t dealt with a model kit in two decades.

I remember my first few times assembling something from a model kit, a Gundam Deathscythe from the iconic mecha anime series Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. I was losing my shit whenever I couldn’t snap two to three parts into place, so my family was wondering (and poking fun at me) why I had the kit in the first place if I was impatient. But now that I have more patience as I have gotten older, whenever I couldn’t snap some parts, I just take a break and have a cup of tea. After four hours of snapping separate parts and mildly freaking out about losing the smaller joints, I finished assembling, and I felt a sense of joyful, childlike accomplishment.

Even Deadpool himself is happy after getting assembled!

Maybe I should make my first figure review here on The Diary with the Blokees Deadpool. We’ll see, though.

And that concludes the third entry of The Recently.

See you in the next post.

Yes, I wear a mask sometimes. You can call me Dewey. Absolutely deranged, below-average writer.
