Song of the Moment CXIV: Motörhead’s “I’ll Be Your Sister

Today, after trying to wake up earlier (and failing) and finishing a ton of paperwork, I’m honestly in low spirits and also anxious for a few reasons. As a fan of professional wrestling, I know there’s at least one reason to celebrate today, which is Austin 3:16 Day (in reference to the definitive Steve Austin promo at WWE King of the Ring in 1996). Still, sometimes the melancholy and anxiety cannot be extinguished easily by a single happy memory.

That doesn’t mean I’m not doing my best to feel better, though. Here’s one of my happy methods this afternoon: listening to my favorite metal band, Motörhead, to burn off my anxious energy while working. In particular, I’ve been listening to their first two albums: the self-titled debut album and Overkill. The latter features one of my top three favorite songs from the speed metal pioneers, “I’ll Be Your Sister”.

Motörhead’s “I’ll Be Your Sister.

It has the signature fast, fearless Motörhead sound that all heavy metal, classic rock, and punk rock fans revere, and beyond all the fast-paced noise, Lemmy Kilmister (Motörhead’s vocalist, bassist, and primary songwriter) wrote some of the most surprisingly affectionate lyrics. Take a look at the last verse:

If you think that it’s the end
I’m gonna prove I can come back again
If you need somebody
I’m your only friend
Only friend

I enjoy listening to “I’ll Be Your Sister” so much that it is almost always on my daily rotation. Recently, I created a playlist with five songs per favorite band/artist, and Motörhead’s setlist wouldn’t be complete without “I’ll Be Your Sister”. And today, while I listened to the band’s debut album and Overkill, I heard it again, and that kind of beautiful noise cheered me up. Because of those reasons, I had to make it my Song of the Moment.

Anyway, I’m going back to Oversight, and then I’ll open a beer for 3:16 Day. See you in the next post. Happy 3:16 Day!

Yes, I wear a mask sometimes. You can call me Dewey. Absolutely deranged, below-average writer.
