Song of the Moment CXI: Queen’s “Tie Your Mother Down”

When I find connections between two things I love, my heart overflows with joy. In particular, there are a few links between two legendary (and my favorite) bands, Foo Fighters and Queen, and one of them is the song “Tie Your Mother Down”.

“Tie Your Mother Down” is the first track on Queen’s fifth studio album, A Day at the Races, and I’d rank it among my top three favorite Queen songs of all time because, in my opinion, it sounds so wild and heavy even for a Queen song. Most notably, Sir Brian May’s guitar riffs on this song are high-octane. (This is perhaps my favorite guitar performance from him.) Queen is a very versatile band, and “Tie Your Mother Down” shows their crazy rock n’ roll side.

I also love that the Foo Fighters performed the song live several times, and sometimes they were joined by Queen’s active members themselves, Sir Brian May and Roger Taylor. Now that’s a supergroup.

Side note: Imagine if all members of Queen (including the late, great Freddie Mercury and John Deacon) joined the Foo Fighters for just one song. Oh, man… I don’t think any stadium could handle all that rock energy.

Song of the Moment LXXIII: Queen’s “Father to Son”

Today’s work tasks made my head spin because there were too many numbers to deal with. But I endured them all because, after work, I spent some quality time with my Father at my favorite cafe Satchmi. My Father had an espresso and, because their affogato is still unavailable, I had an iced mocha.

Whenever I’m alone with my Father, he always talks about how he grew up poor and how he gave his blood, sweat, and tears to achieve success. He also reminds me to be strong no matter how tough it gets. I have heard his stories before, but I keep listening because the entire family and I would not have a comfortable life if he did not work hard. I will always be thankful to my Father, and I’m trying my best to be as strong as he is.

Oh… Queen’s “Father to Son” was playing on my mind when I talked to my Father today. So tonight, it’s my Song of the Moment. (And have I mentioned that Queen is one of my top five favorite bands of all time? No? Now you know.)
