Notes to Self XIX

I, The Deranged Writer, love any type of music. On every music device I have ever owned, from my third-generation iPod Nano (anyone remember that?) to my iPhone 15, my music library is a melting pot of artists and songs. I was not vocal about my love for various kinds of music though; only a few friends knew this fact.

But that all changed when I found myself on a Dave Grohl interview marathon (for the nth time) on an afternoon in 2011.

This is my 19th Notes to Self.

I don’t believe in guilty pleasures, you know. I believe you should be able to like what you like. If you like a fucking Kesha song, listen to fucking Kesha.

Dave Grohl, RTÉ interview at Oxegen (2011)

That quote changed everything for me as a music fan. Since I heard that quote in a Dave Grohl interview with Dave Fenning for RTÉ in 2011, I became more vocal about my love for all types of music to everyone, not just to my loved ones. I can proudly say that I love bands like Foo Fighters, Coheed and Cambria, and Linkin Park, while I shamelessly appreciate music from the Spice Girls, Britney Spears, and M2M.

What street cred? I simply love music.

And since Mr. Grohl mentioned Kesha, what’s my favorite song from her? It’s definitely her debut single, “TiK ToK”, because it reminds me of happy college memories. (In particular, it reminds me of that one crazy college party in between the shortest term break ever.)

The music video of Kesha’s “Tik Tok”.

Also, the first few sentences of Mr. Grohl’s quote can be applied to things outside music. For example, my list of favorite series is also varied; I don’t stick to one genre. My favorite series of all time (as I mentioned many times here on The Diary) is the totally underrated American sci-fi crime thriller/drama series Person of Interest, and I also love the iconic American rom-com series How I Met Your Mother.

Thank you to my hero, Dave Grohl, for reassuring me that I should be able to like what I like, especially when it comes to music.

Anyway, you can watch the full Dave Grohl interview with the quote in the video below. (When you hit the play button, you can hear the quote right away. But if that doesn’t happen, you can find the quote at the 12:35 mark.)

And that, my dear reader, concludes Notes to Self XIX.

The Deranged Writer

Yes, he wears a mask sometimes. And according to most people, he looks like Bruno Mars when he is unmasked. Absolutely deranged, below-average writer.
