Hi! I’m The Deranged Writer. Welcome to the first edition of Notes to Self, where I remind myself of a relevant quote or a simple reminder from any form of media or someone I know in real life. And tonight, I would like to share one of my favorite quotes of all time, from one of my favorite movies, Batman Begins.
Spoiler warning if you haven’t seen Batman Begins. If you don’t mind being spoiled, please continue reading this post.
Why do we fall…? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up.
Batman Begins (2005)
In the first part of The Dark Knight Trilogy, Thomas Wayne gently said the quote to an injured Bruce, his son, while he carried him back to Wayne Manor, their massive home. Later in the film, Bruce Wayne confronted the terrifying Ra’s al Ghul and his League of Shadows after his playboy billionaire persona subtly saved his birthday guests by rudely showing them the door out. After Ra’s al Ghul revealed his plan to destroy the city with Dr. Crane’s fear toxin, a massive fight took place inside the mansion, and the villains burned it to the ground. Fortunately, Alfred Pennyworth, his butler and ally, was able to save the only living Wayne in Gotham, and they sought refuge in the Batcave.
Bruce looked back in horror, realizing that the same home his family had built was gone in flames. Alfred brought a glimpse of hope to Bruce by echoing the same words his father said to him when he was young and in pain:
Why do we fall…? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up.
One of the things I admire about Batman (my favorite superhero) is that, beyond the impressive physical conditioning, skills, and intellect, beneath the dark, brooding exterior, he shows at least the slightest of vulnerability to the one person he truly listens to: Alfred. And in return, Alfred gives him firm words that give clarity and hope. Batman also shows his quiet strength by using the lessons he learned to do better, and he continues the grand campaign against evil. He fell many times, yet he picked himself up more times than when he fell, and that is inspiring to me.
Over the years, I have launched a few main blogs many times. After several days of successful blogging, I’d get caught in the silence and unproductivity. Whenever that happened, I gave up the blog and launched another one. The cycle continues. This year, I’m relaunching this blog, The Diary, and while I’m scared about losing my way again as I write here, I have this feeling that things will be different this time because I have writing goals that are achievable and realistic. I’ve fallen so many times with the old blogs I’ve created, but now I will write while I’m also equipped with the lessons I’ve learned over the years.
I will reveal those goals in the next post, but in the meantime, wish me luck as I relaunch The Diary!
Anyway, would you like to share a quote or a reminder I should keep in mind? Send your quotes and reminders in the comments section below or email me at therealderangedwriter@gmail.com.
